Success Story: Pennsylvania Classrooms for the Future
Holly M. Jobe, Project Manager, Classrooms for the Future Pennsylvania Department of Education, Harrisburg, PA
Classrooms for the Future is Pennsylvania Governor Rendell's bold high school reform initiative to put laptops on student and teacher desks of every English, math, science and social studies public classroom by 2009. The cornerstone of the project is professional development to change teaching and learning to meet the needs of 21st century students. In addition to face- to-face vendor workshops and a comprehensive series of on-line courses, each school has a part time technology integration coach to assist teachers in creating technology- rich lessons to fully engage students. One hundred and three schools in seventy-nine districts participated in the pilot phase of the project during the 2006-07 school year and teachers, students and administrators are excited, engaged and are looking forward to next year. Holly outlined the Classrooms for the Future program and highlight the first year's activities.

Latest News in Digital Learning
Beyond the basics, students will need 21st century competencies to survive and thrive in the future. They will have to know how to think critically, apply knowledge to new situations, analyze information, understand new ideas, communicate effectively, collaborate, solve problems, and make decisions. School districts are looking for ways to help students acquire these new skills while they also address NCLB mandates.
