A Database to Boost Achievement

The Erie School District (Erie, PA) is launching a new student information database that will give teachers instant access to real-time data and, district administrators hope, make the classroom a more effective and efficient place. Teachers can track attendance and grades, analyze standardized test scores, keep track of health and behavior issues, search a student's class schedule, and more

"This is probably, in my tenure with the district, one of the most significant transitions the district has undertaken," said Erie schools Superintendent Jim Barker. School officials also noted that the investment brings the district up to speed with what other districts are accomplishing with integrated databases.

The database and related overhaul of the district's network is funded with with a $15 million grant from the GE Foundation. Success will be judged by improved student achievement.
